Small businesses are the backbone of America. However, setting up a small business isn’t as straightforward as buying a domain name and going into business. There are five possible business formats, tax implications, forms galore to complete, and millions of ways to get things wrong. Roger Pearson’s Mastering Business Basics Workbook lays it all out in easy-to-understand bite-sized chunks. He starts by explaining the different business types and the pros and cons of each. He then goes on to discuss paperwork, keeping accounts, followed by chapters on taxation in all its convoluted ways, which he explains so well. There is a space at the end of every chapter for the reader to make notes or answer questions Roger has posed. I strongly recommend readers take advantage of those sections.

Mastering Business Basics Workbook is a resource every small business owner in America should keep on their bookshelf. As a former accountant, I found this book to be comprehensive, factually correct, and relevant. One of the benefits of owning this book is that it remains evergreen. It’s not a guide to read once and forget about; it can and should be referred to every time there's a change in the business. What might not be applicable in its first read may suddenly become crucial before implementing a change. This book is better suited for a US audience, as Roger Pearson discusses the tax laws in the country and refers to forms by letter and number. Without this book, new business owners may struggle and end up making costly mistakes, making this a must-have resource.
