Scams are definately getting harder to spot nowadays. That is mainly due to how Artificial intelligence has changed how fraud works by making messages smoother, faces more familiar, and stories more believable.
According to Chainabuse, a leading reporting platform for malicious crypto activity worldwide, reports of AI-enabled scams grew 456% between May 2024 and April 2025, compared with the same period the year before. And that earlier period was already a 78% increase over 2022-2023. This dramatic spike wasn't just more scams, but scams supercharged by AI tools that make fraud faster, cheaper, and more believable. Here is the real staggering news: Americans lost $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024 alone.
AI generated scams are different because they can produce realistic text, images, audio and video at scale. For the scammers, this means there are fewer mistakes and greater reach. Instead of the clumsy emails or generic scripts that were easier to spot, bad actors can now create polished messages, believable personas, and lifelike videos - translated and tailored to a specific audience.
AI agents operate with minimal oversight to scrape public information, personalize outreach, manage fake customer support channels, and test which tactics work the best. They no longer need large teams of people to collect and figure this all out.
AI is also making it easier to impersonate executives, coworkers, friends, and family members. With just a short snippet of audio, scammers can replicate a person's voice very convincingly. There have been cases where employees have transfer large amounts of money after participating in what appeared to be legitimate video calls with senior leadership.
For instance, in June 2025, scammers used a deepfake video of a well-known doctor promoting an investment opportunity. One of the Scam's victims was 82-year-old Maurine Meleck of Florida. She lost $200,000 she had saved for her grandson with autism. "I handed nearly every penny I have over to a fraudster, while believing I was growing my nest egg for my grandson," she said.
But two can play at this game. AI is also being used to detect and disrupt fraud. Financial institutions and investigators use machine learning to find stolen funds and identify scam patterns more quickly than the old manual methods. You can help also. If you suspect you've encountered a scam, you can file a complaint at Fraud.org and at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. That helps authorities track patterns and protect others.
Of course, the first line of defense is to learn to protect yourself. The following habits will help:
- Slow down when urgency is used to pressure you. Take the time to investigate and double check.
- Verify requests for money through a second channel.
- Always be skeptical of endorcements, especially when it involves using crytocurrency.
- Remember that text, audio, and video can all be manipulated.
Awareness remains one of the strongest defenses.
